Artist Statement.
My art is an expression of aesthetic and form, coming from a fascination with 3-dimensional expression. After beginning with flatter pieces, I began working with relief sculpture. I now focus my content largely on in-the-round pieces with an additional focus on acrylic painting. Adding this three-dimensionality changes the dynamic of the artwork, making it more immersive for the viewer.
Throughout my childhood and up until now, I have been exposed to religious influences. My personal experience with spirituality is something I do not share with my viewers. Instead my relationship with religion expresses itself as an objective survey of the themes that are played through a lens of spiritual beliefs. I am less interested in expressing my own spirituality, and more interested in exploring what is used to portray biblical themes. Many forms of media use religious imagery and symbolism, and my fascination emerges from the purposeful placement of allegory. Biblical themes and imagery frequently permeate unexpected media, and being able to make these connections create a deeper sense of meaning within my work. The aesthetic of religious imagery, and the parallels to biblical events that exist within this imagery is something I wish to emulate in my art.
By working off of the base of a 3-dimensional object, my work becomes more engaging to the eye of the viewer. The triangular form is a fascinating form for me, creating a shape less static than that of a cube, with the triangular sides providing interest. The separate planes allow for distinction, but they also provide a sense of cohesiveness in one form, providing a simple sense of unity. My process begins with a central focus relating to the theme of the piece, then shifts to accumulation of material to create density.
