Pope.L was born in 1955 in Newark, NJ. He is best known for his performance art, but has created painting, drawings, sculpture, theatrical performances, among numerous other forms of art. His work often deals with our culture and it's problems and expectations. These issues usually stem from social, racial, and economic conflict. Website: https://www.miandn.com/artists/pope-l I've gotten to see two exhibitions of Pope.L's work. The first time was at VCU's ICA in 2018. I don't remember much of that exhibition because we didn't spend much time there. In January of this year we visited the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. We saw his new exhibition: member Pope.L, 1978–2001 Label Information (from left to right): POPE.L chmera 2018 Neon Installation view of Agora on The High Line, New York, 2018 POPE.L Baile 2016 72-hour non-stop performance at the 32nd São Paulo Bienal POPE.L Snow Crawl 1992-2001 Wood, mirror, TV, DVD, and sandbags 117 by 30 by 30 in. When I first saw Pope.L's work I didn't pay it too much mind. The night we had gone to the ICA was the night of some event there, so it was really loud and we decided not to spend too much time there. However, when we saw it at the MoMA, I found that I was attracted to his work. I enjoyed the diversity in his mediums. Personally, I dislike some bodies of work that focus on just one medium. I think it's somewhat repetitive. So I really respond to his work. I want to try and make work that may have similar themes, but I don't want it all to look the same.
I also like interactive works, which is why I really liked Snow Crawl when it was at the MoMA. Getting to climb up the stairs and experiencing the work without worrying about obstructing some else's view was cool. Overall, Pope.L's work is distinct and he creates work that is not just visual art, but also performance art. I really enjoy how his work is very different.

The first photo was taken on Friday. I mostly resolved all the shadows. The second photo was my progress after Monday. I started working with white to create the highlights and lighter values. I still need to work on the cup more, there's a lot of highlights in it.
